Eoin Morgan has backed Alex Hales to rediscover his touch in one-day cricket after a poor Test series.

Hales made only one half-century in four Tests against Pakistan and his place in the team is under pressure for the winter tours of Bangladesh and India.

But Morgan is convinced the opener will deliver against the white ball as England began their five-match Royal London campaign at Southampton today.

He said: “Alex played very well in the limited-overs matches in South Africa last winter even though he didn’t have the best time in the Tests.

“He played out of his skin. I have been in that position before and it’s a nice feeling to be able to play with freedom in white-ball cricket. He has the backing of everyone.”

Hales and Jason Roy have formed an effective opening partnership for England in one-day and Twenty20 cricket since they came together last summer.
