Alastair Cook has won the battle with Kevin Pietersen for the hearts of the English cricket public, according to the captain’s former team-mate Steve Harmison.

While Cook’s captaincy has been criticised by his predecessors and former players, it was clear during his innings of 95 here yesterday that supporters remain on his side.

The most controversial decision of Cook’s reign was to dispense with Pietersen after last winter’s Ashes whitewash. Although Pietersen retains high-profile supporters and has attracted sympathy on social media, Harmison — a close friend of Cook — believes it is clear whose side cricket fans are on.

“If you want to use this as Pietersen against Cook, the English cricket public showed who they want to lead this team,” said Harmison, who played 63 Tests. “Everyone wanted Cook to do well.

“He is 29 and he went past Pietersen and David Gower yesterday to go third on England’s list of all-time Test run scorers. He is a nice lad with a good nature, and he is perfect for this group of players to lead them forward.”

Resuming on 247 for two, England added 16 runs in the first half hour today without losing a wicket. Gary Ballance moved to 107 with Ian Bell unbeaten on 29.

Harmison told BBC Test Match Special: “Cook the player has answered a lot of critics by getting runs. Now Cook the captain needs to lead from the front. There has been a lot said but it’s important you separate the captain and the player.”
