All members of England’s travelling party have tested negative for coronavirus after arriving in Sri Lanka ahead of this month’s Test series.

A squad of 16 players plus seven reserves and coaching staff - who were also tested in the UK prior to their departure - touched down in Hambantota on board a chartered flight on Sunday and followed strict Covid protocols upon landing, including being sprayed with disinfectant by airport staff in full protective suits.

Players will now go into a period of individual isolation in their hotel rooms until another round of testing on Tuesday, after which - presuming those results are also negative - they will be allowed to train ahead of the start of the First Test on January 14.

The tour was originally scheduled to take place in March last year but England flew home before the competitive action had begun as the pandemic began to take hold and the two-match series will now take place behind closed doors at Galle.

The series is the first part of a lengthy tour of Asia, which will then see England travel to India to play four Tests, as well as five T20s and three ODIs.
