England pair Ben Stokes and Mark Wood set for rest ahead of winter tours of Bangladesh and India

Break: Ben Stokes and Mark Wood could be in line for a rest

England will decide after tonight’s Twenty20 against Pakistan at Old Trafford whether to give Ben Stokes and Mark Wood the rest of the season off.

The Durham pair are likely to be key figures on England’s winter tours of Bangladesh and India, with all-rounder Stokes an automatic pick in all three forms of cricket, and Wood one of the best fast bowlers in the country.

England coach Trevor Bayliss and the selectors must decide whether it is more important to keep Wood and Stokes in rhythm, or hold them back in order to avoid aggravating injuries both have suffered. Wood, in particular, has struggled to play back-to-back Tests in the past.

After completing their match against Yorkshire, Durham have two Championship fixtures remaining, at home to Surrey and at Hampshire.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Chris Jordan has followed Moeen Ali in committing to the tour of Bangladesh, if selected. One-day captain Eoin Morgan is thought to have misgivings about making the trip, even though it has been declared safe by ECB security chief Reg Dickason.

Jordan said: “Everything else off the field can take care of itself. If selected, I will definitely go.”
