England claim major victory in Ashes fight

Standard Sport13 January 2014

England’s women took a big step today towards regaining the Ashes as they defeated Australia by 61 runs in the sole Test of the series.

Set a target of 185 for victory, Australia were all out for 123 with Kate Cross and Anya Shrubsole each taking three wickets for the tourists at the WACA.

England captain Charlotte Edwards earlier passed the half-century mark to score 56 before becoming one of five victims for Australian bowler Ellyse Perry, while Jenny Gunn made 44.

Edwards said: “The last four days have been a rollercoaster but I’m really proud of the girls. We had some great performances.”

Three one-day internationals — the first at the MCG on Saturday night — and three Twenty20 games remain. England picked up six points today but the other matches are only worth two so they need just two wins to retain the trophy.

In the men’s game, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is keen to inflict another 5-0 whitewash on England after the Ashes thumping.

The hosts won the first match of the one-day series by six wickets in Melbourne yesterday.

Maxwell said: “England looked a little bit drained. Hopefully, we can keep the foot on the throat and make it 10-0.”
