England boost as Andy Flower signs new, improved deal

10 April 2012

Andy Flower has been handed an improved contract to stay as England coach after guiding the team to Ashes and World Twenty20 glory in the past year.

The Zimbabwean has signed a new deal, which includes a significant rise on his previous annual salary of about £250,000, to keep him in his role following interest from India.

As Standard Sport revealed on April 21, it is believed that team director Flower will be given the option of sitting out certain parts of England's increasingly busy schedule. His bosses at the England and Wales Cricket Board are keen to prevent burn-out and they believe Flower is as crucial to the team's future as the players.

England face Sri Lanka and India - who now have former England coach Duncan Fletcher within their ranks - in Test cricket this summer as they try to reach top spot in the ICC rankings.

"We have made no secret of our determination to become the No1 side in the world and I believe we have the talent to help us realise our ambitions," Flower said.

England's managing director, Hugh Morris, added: "Andy's outstanding leadership, commitment, and his open and honest approach, have been key factors in the success the England squad have enjoyed."
