England's batsmen collapsed within sight of a first global one-day title as India won the Champions Trophy by five runs at Edgbaston.

The prospect of a washout and a share of the honours looked likely throughout almost six hours of rain delays at Edgbaston but after the overs were stripped back to the bare minimum 20-a-side, a minor classic unfolded.

Ishant Sharma played a key role, removing established pair Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara with successive deliveries in the 18th over when the England pair seemed to be steering their side past India's mark of 129 for seven.

Before Morgan's weak dismissal, England needed 20 runs in 16 balls with six wickets in hand.

What followed was not pretty, Bopara following his partner with a tame pull to square leg before Jos Buttler and Tim Bresnan departed in ugly fashion to ensure England needed 15 off the final over.

On a pitch offering elaborate turn - England were bamboozled by the visiting spinners at times - Ravichandran Ashwin closed things out easily to leave the hosts 124 for eight.

At the mid-innings break, England were probably favourites, Bopara turning in a superb spell of three for 20 as India slumped to 66 for five.

But Virat Kohli hit back with 43 in 34 balls and Ravindra Jadeja struck a late - and crucial - 33 not out.

There was controversy early in the England chase when Ian Bell was given out stumped by Australian third umpire Bruce Oxenford despite inconclusive television evidence.
