Ben Foakes hits century on Test debut as he rescues England innings in Sri Lanka

Debutant Ben Foakes completed a superb century early on the second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka as he continued England's recovery mission in Galle.

The Surrey man, who was drafted in as an injury replacement for Jonny Bairstow just 11 days ago, was called upon inside the first session of the opening day after watching the tourists' top order fail again.

He arrived at the crease with England 103 for five and after losing partner Jos Buttler shared an 88-run stand with Surrey team-mate Sam Curran which shifted the outlook for the visitors.

The 25-year-old came through the afternoon and evening sessions with his wicket still intact and sat 13 runs shy of a debut ton overnight.

The wicketkeeper-batsman resumed his innings at the start of the day on 87 and found the boundary in the sixth over of the day to reach three figures.

He is the 20th Englishman to score a century on debut.
