Australia call up David Hussey

10 April 2012

Australia have called up David Hussey as a replacement for Michael Clarke for the final stages of the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Victoria batsman Hussey, whose inclusion is subject to approval by the ICC, had been due to fly from Melbourne to New Delhi tomorrow morning to prepare for the Bushrangers' Champions League Twenty20 campaign scheduled to start next Thursday.

Australia squeezed through to the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy thanks to a last-ball victory over Pakistan at Centurion in their final group game yesterday.

The win was achieved without the services of vice-captain Clarke, who has returned to Sydney for treatment on a chronic lower back injury.

Even if he is cleared to play, it remains to be seen whether Hussey will make the cut for Australia's semi-final against England on Friday in Pretoria, but he could come into consideration should they advance to the final. Australia thumped England 6-1 in the one-day international series at the end of this summer's Ashes Tour.

Left-arm quick Nathan Bracken will undergo surgery after being forced to return home early from the Champions Trophy because of a knee injury.

Cricket Australia doctor Trefor James said the decision was made after consultation with specialists in Melbourne and Sydney.

"Following consultation with knee specialists, Nathan has been booked in for arthroscopic surgery next week," James said.

"His progress following surgery will monitored for a return to training in due course."
