Alastair Cook today praised his England team after leading them to a 2-1 series victory in India.

Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell’s 208-run partnership ensured the Fourth Test in Nagpur was drawn, handing England their first series win in India since 1985.

On his maiden assignment as permanent captain, Cook (above) was named man of the series after hitting three centuries in the first three Tests.

“It was a very special day for us, a special tour — great memories,” said Cook. “Today was a fantastic effort. There haven’t been too many soft dismissals. The batters have fronted up and I can’t credit them enough. Everyone in the squad can be very proud, especially after losing the First Test in Ahmedabad. The way we bounced back was fantastic.

“I can’t be more proud in my first series. The amount of effort the lads have put in for me — I can’t ask more. We’ve played on four different wickets and have adapted to what’s been thrown at us.

“The bowlers were brilliant and the batters have all contributed. It’s nice when it goes well but I can’t praise our team enough. It’s been an amazing tour. Huge thanks to our fans who have travelled from England.”

James Anderson was named man of the match after taking four for 81 in India’s first innings and he ended the series with 12 wickets.

The paceman said: “People thought spinners would get all the wickets over here but we knew the seamers had a job to do.”
