Colly demands England ruthless streak

Paul Collingwood hopes his new-look England side can show a ruthless streak and send West Indies home empty-handed.

Saturday's third NatWest Series contest at Trent Bridge is effectively a final as both teams chase rare one-day silverware with England having struggled in the shortened form of the game, aside from the shock Commonwealth Bank Series success in Australia, while West Indies' last one-day series triumph abroad was in the ICC Champions Trophy here in 2004.

"We spoke about having a ruthless edge, when we go back to thinking about Australia we all know how good it felt when we won the one-day series," said Collingwood. "Hopefully we don't give West Indies an inch and leave with nothing from this trip."

Wet weather meant the ground was unfit for the players' use on Friday but the persistent rain has been less of a problem to England than Shivnarine Chanderpaul. They have dismissed him only four times in eight innings to date and two of those have been while he was hitting out with the tail in the Tests.

So far this series he has hit 53 not out at Lord's and a match-winning unbeaten 116 at Edgbaston - forcing Collingwood and coach Peter Moores to examine previous encounters with West Indies in a bid to formulate plans to dismiss him.

"We weren't too far off the other day, a little bit of luck here and there wouldn't go a miss," Collingwood said.

"But sometimes you have to give these guys credit. When they go into these patches of form the luck tends to be with them. We keep trying to get him out with the plans we have, and if we can keep applying pressure hopefully we can make that breakthrough."

With damp conditions likely to suit seam bowling if and when play gets under way in Nottingham, England may once again chose to leave out spinner Monty Panesar.

"It is all about the balance of the side and under the right conditions we obviously want to get Monty in," said Collingwood. "But it all comes down to the situation of the weather and the condition of the wicket."

England have no injury concerns other than a slightly sore bicep for fast bowler James Anderson.
