Collingwood banking on great escape

12 April 2012

England batsman Paul Collingwood believes England can still salvage a draw from the first Test in Brisbane after falling four runs short of a second-innings century in Brisbane.

Andrew Flintoff's side finished the fourth day on 293 for five in their second innings, still trailing Australia by 354 runs.

Collingwood's hundred was within touching distance before he fell victim to master spinner Warne but the Durham player was much happier after a fighting England performance.

"We had to find our feet, it was as simple as that. We haven't played the cricket we had wanted so far so it was an important day to go out there and show ourselves that we really can go out and play," he told Sky Sports 1.

Collingwood endured a difficult spell against Stuart Clark early in the day but held firm to progress and steady England's second innings.

"It was a tough spell (against Clark) with the harder, newer ball and when it was hitting the cracks it was doing a fair bit.

"I wasn't too sure where I was going to get my runs from but I managed to hang in there and had a bit of luck. When the ball got softer it was a bit easier.

"It was a good fightback from the boys and hopefully we can keep going on Monday."
