Sachin Tendulkar's 99th international century put India on course for a huge total against South Africa in Nagpur before the co-hosts lost nine wickets for just 29 runs in an astonishing collapse.

Tendulkar compiled 111 off 101 balls to register his sixth World Cup century in the Group B match, but only Virender Sehwag (73) and Gautam Gambhir (69) supported him as India posted 296.

Dale Steyn finished with five for 50 as the Proteas rampaged through the middle and lower order.

Having won the toss on a flat wicket, India dominated from the outset, with Tendulkar and Sehwag building a 142-run opening stand in quick time.

At one stage a total approaching 400 seemed likely but remarkably India found themselves bowled out with eight deliveries left.

As well as Steyn's lethal spell, spinner Robin Peterson took two for 52 after recovering from a poor start.
