Clubs set for Tevez explanation

12 April 2012

Premier League chairmen are likely to be given a further detailed "explanation" over the Carlos Tevez affair on Tuesday.

West Ham's controversial signing of the Argentinian star continues to overshadow the club's successful fight for Premiership survival with relegated Sheffield United ready to pursue legal action - backed by Wigan, Fulham and Charlton and other clubs, including Middlesbrough.

West Ham were fined a record £5.5million but the clubs feel they should have been deducted points, and Wigan chairman Dave Whelan believes Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore "has got a lot of explaining to do", saying more evidence could come to light on Tuesday.

"I had a fax off him telling me that all Premier League clubs are going to get an explanation (on Tuesday)," Whelan maintained.

With the saga set to drag on, Whelan believes the Blades have got a strong case for new charges.

The Wigan supremo has questioned how the Premier League could firstly punish the Hammers for the irregularities, before quickly clearing the South American to continue playing.

"We cannot reverse the decision the commission came out with," said the Wigan chairman.

"It is impossible - they were appointed by the Premier League and all the clubs agreed these people would take charge of the case.

"But now we are saying he [Tevez] has been registered illegally for a second time. Who owns him? Where will this £30million be going we are told he is now going for?

"We need a new hearing because he has been registered illegally again. That should be another fine or points deduction. What we can look at is how they opened a new transfer window to sign an illegal player."
