City in bid to sign up Ramos

13 April 2012

Manchester City have identified Sevilla coach Juande Ramos and former Fulham boss Chris Coleman as two possible candidates for their managerial vacancy but are beginning to give up hope on a takeover from Thaksin Shinawatra.

Chief executive Alistair Mackintosh flew to Europe to speak to people on their shortlist and while double UEFA Cup winner Ramos is City's No 1 target, Coleman is expected to be interviewed.

Meanwhile with former Thai prime minister Thaksin's assets frozen by his government, sources close to his bankers Seymour Pearce last night revealed that they are trying "one more throw of the dice" to find the cash to fund the takeover.

City have asked for assurances that the freeze will not affect his bid, with a deadline of this Friday.

Although chairman John Wardle remains open to any offers, he has now made the search for a replacement for Stuart Pearce his main priority with candidates being told they will have about £20million to spend.

City know that they must move quickly as the squad needs rebuilding after the departure of defender Sylvain Distin and the release of out-of-contract players.

But Joey Barton's move to Newcastle is in the balance because of a row over a £300,000 loyalty bonus.

City say he is not entitled to it after activating the clause in his contract that says he can talk to other clubs who bid £5.5m.

But Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce said: "City are out of order. This is a confidential issue that should not have been made public. I'm flabbergasted and want the situation resolved."
