Chris Gayle threatens to quit West Indies top spot

Quit threat: Chris Gayle is considering standing down as West indies captain after just 15 matches in charges

Chris Gayle is considering stepping down as the West Indies captain after only 15 matches in charge because he is frustrated with selection policies.

West Indies Cricket Board chief executive Donald Peters said today: "I am aware he is considering not making himself available for the captaincy."

However, Peters added that the board had not received any official notification from the Jamaican opener.

In 15 Tests and one-day internationals, Gayle has led the West Indies to five wins and nine losses. Seven of the defeats took place during this summer's games against Australia.

Gayle, 28, had previously expressed surprise at the decision to play untried youngsters against the Aussies.

"I thought it was the wrong time to try these things, to experiment a lot," he said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have called up uncapped paceman Dammika Prasad as an additional bowling option for the Second Test against India in Galle starting on Thursday.

The 25-year-old appeared in three one-day internationals in 2006 before suffering a series of injuries but has since impressed with the A team and recently against the Indians, claiming four wickets in a warm-up game.

Prasad, however, is unlikely to make the final XI, with Sri Lanka expected to retain the same side that won the First Test in Colombo by an innings and 239 runs.
