Chester draws on past experience

12 April 2012

Hull forward Chris Chester is hoping his experience of the big occasions can help Hull lift the engage Super League crown and in turn draw a line under his own injury problems.

The 28-year-old is expected to be on the bench for Peter Sharp's men when they take on St Helens, just two months after undergoing surgery on an Achilles injury which appeared to have curtailed his season.

"There are other people in the side that have more experience than I do," he said. "People like Richard Swain, who has played in a Grand Final in Australia. I have been there twice though and am hopeful I can pass some words on. I'd just encourage the boys to relax and enjoy it."

He added: "I've had a stop-start two seasons with injuries but that's just part and parcel of the game. I've never been injured in my career apart from these last two seasons and they all seem to be coming at once. I'm hoping I've got over the worst of them now and I'm really looking forward to the next few years.

"I played in the Academy final and was called up for the Bradford game, so I really thank Peter for backing me and my ability."

Chester also admits that the new-look Old Trafford will be an even greater venue to play at this time around, with the attendance for the game set to top the 70,000 mark.

"I've played here in the two finals for Wigan in front of 60,000 and there was a great atmosphere, especially when you walk out there for the first time, but as players we just have to put that to one side and concentrate on the game and doing our jobs well.

"It's a massive ask too against a quality St Helens side who deserved to finish at the top of the table over the course of the season. The game will be won in the forwards I feel. They've got some big lads like Paul Anderson and (Jason) Cayless, as well as some athletic lads. I feel if we get on top of them, which we can, then we've got a chance.

"We just need to turn it on."
