Chelsea player ratings vs Arsenal: Christensen in horror mix-up while Lukaku fluffs rare chance

Chelsea fell to defeat at home to Arsenal on Wednesday as Thomas Tuchel’s side returned to Premier League duty in disappointing fashion.

James Robson was at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea suffered a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal.

Edouard Mendy 5

First half save kept Gabriel at bay. Badly exposed by unusually flimsy Chelsea defence without Silva and Rudiger.

Reece James 6

Another go at centre back – but he was part of a particularly shaky rear-guard in the first half that was cut open by Arsenal.

Malang Sarr 5

Horrible mix up with Kante gifted Nketiah his second of the night. Wasn’t helped by being including in a makeshift line up – but did not impress either.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Wonderful finish to get Chelsea back on level terms for a second time in the match. Arsenal had too much joy down his side and he let himself down when hauling Saka to ground for Arsenal’s late penalty.

Andreas Christensen 4

Horror moment cost Chelsea dearly to let in Nketiah for the opening goal. Hooked at the break as Tuchel looked to sort out the defence..

Marcos Alonso 6

Left his flank wide open to allow Arsenal to score a second – but offered plenty of threat going forward aside from that moment.

N’Golo Kante 6

At times it felt like he was the only Chelsea midfielder repelling Arsenal. He needed more help – but repeatedly cut out Arsenal’s attempts to get out of their own third.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek 6

Always looks so classy on the ball. At times it was too easy for Arsenal to bypass him as they went on the attack.

Timo Werner 6

Another decisive moment from him with his goal in the first half. It might have taken a heavy deflection, but it was about him committing defenders and taking a chance.

Mason Mount 6

Chelsea’s heartbeat on his 100th Premier League performance. Wonderful ball set up Azpilicueta’s goal and so tenacious when chasing down red shirts.

Romelu Lukaku 5

A rare start and a big chance for him to begin to get his Chelsea career back on track. Tuchel said he would get an hour and it felt like he could not wait to get him off as the clock hit 60 minutes. One shot – off target – all night.

Thiago Silva (Christensen, 46) 6

Brought on to bring some order to the defence - but there was still another calamity to come from those around him.

Kai Havertz (Lukaku, 60) 4

Had no more impact than Lukaku before him.

Hakim Ziyech (Alonso, 81) 3

A desperate last ditch attempt by Tuchel to turn the match. It did not work.

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Chalobah, Jorginho, Silva, Barkley, Pulisic, Saul
