Cech mate: The Chelsea keeper makes a fan's dreams come true
James Benge10 December 2015

He has the hands of Lev Yashin, the shot-stopping skills of Peter Schmeichel and the natural rhythm of John Bonham. Ladies and gentlemen, Petr Cech.

On Tuesday Indonesian fan Fia tweeted the Chelsea keeper asking him to cover a song by famously anodyne Irish rockers The Script for her birthday in 11 days.

Cech, as proactive on Twitter as he is between the sticks, assured Fia he would try. Better than his word he responded within 24 hours with a cover of ‘For The First Time’, a track that set the charts alight in 2010, reaching number 4 and being covered by The Wanted, which you watch below.

The goalkeeper has uploaded a number of drum covers to his Youtube channel in the past six months, including covers of Foo Fighters and Coldplay. He has earned himself over 16,000 subscribers to his channel and over 1,000,000 views.

Fia was delighted with her early birthday present, changing her Twitter bio to thank the keeper. It’s clear that the Indonesian fan has not taken rumours of the Czech shot-stopper’s departure from Stamford Bridge well, as she subsequently retweeted pleas from another Chelsea fan, Lilian Onouha, begging Cech not to leave.
