Carson the hero for Charlton

12 April 2012

Scott Carson emerged the hero as his two penalty shoot-out saves handed Charlton a place in the Carling Cup quarter-finals and ended Chesterfield's fairytale run in the competition.

The League One side, who had dumped Wolves, Manchester City and West Ham out in the three previous rounds, gave Iain Dowie's men an almighty fright with another sensational display in a 3-3 draw after extra-time at Saltergate.

Roy McFarland's side twice led in normal time with goals from Colin Larkin and Caleb Folan - which sandwiched Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's 40th-minute equaliser - and put them on course for another stunning success.

However, second-half substitute Darren Bent claimed a 73rd-minute leveller before Hasselbaink netted again in the 93rd minute.

But the drama had only just begun to unfold as substitute Wayne Allison headed home in the 120th minute to tie the scores at 3-3 in an incredible finale.

That ensured a penalty shoot-out in which Charlton emerged victorious as Carson, on loan from Liverpool, denied Derek Niven and Mark Allott to extend the Addicks' unbeaten run to five games.
