Carlos: I'm not joining Chelsea

13 April 2012

Real Madrid full-back Roberto Carlos has dismissed suggestions that he might be the next superstar to join ruble-rich Russian Roman Abramovich's Chelsea revolution.

It was reported in Spain over the weekend that Chelsea had offered the 30-year-old Brazil international a contract worth £4million per year until June 2010.

"It could be that there is something, but I want to continue at Real Madrid, enjoying myself as I have up to now," Roberto Carlos insisted on the radio programme 'Carrussel Deportivo' on Sunday evening.

"They say I have had a meeting with Abramovich? But I don't speak Russian."
However, if Madrid were to receive a big offer, now could be an opportune time for them to let the World Cup winner depart.

The left-back's current contract runs until June 2005 with a buy-out clause of £60m, which means his club would be able to squeeze a big fee out of Chelsea, as they were able to do when Claude Makelele moved to Stamford Bridge during the summer.

Makelele cost Chelsea £16.8m as the London club broke through the £100m barrier for summer spending following the takeover by new owner Abramovich.

The Brazilian, who earns marginally less than the likes of Ronaldo and David Beckham, clearly is not keen on a move however.

And he could be set to sign a new contract which would see him play out the final years of his career in Madrid.

"Marcos Motta (his agent) is arriving in Madrid on Monday," he said.
"I am in no hurry to renew my contract because I know I will see it out and I know that players such as Michel Salgado and Raul are ahead of me to do that."
