Carlisle close to return

Clarke Carlisle is expected to return to the club at the end of next week.

The Queens Park Rangers defender has been having treatment for an alcoholrelated illness at Tony Adams's Sporting Chance Clinic and is making excellent progress.

Chief executive David Davies said: "Clarke is on course to meet his 28-day discharge date. It is good news and we're looking forward to his return."

Marc Bircham, meanwhile, is likely to return in place of on-loan defender Arthur Gnohere for tonight's Carling Cup visit to Sheffield United, with Steve Palmer moving into the back-four. Tony Thorpe is also cup-tied, having played for Luton in the previous round.
