Knockout: Carl Froch v George Groves at Wembley in May
Standard Sport15 December 2014

The showdown between Carl Froch and George Groves at Wembley was the most in-demand sporting event for fans in 2014.

Data from ticket marketplace Viagogo shows the all-British boxing match, in which Froch triumphed with an 8th round knockout, came ahead of Wimbledon and the Six Nations in terms of fan popularity.

Fans have also been desperate to grab tickets for the Rugby World Cup, which will take place next year, making it the second-most in demand event in 2014.

There has also been a marked increase in demand for American sports this year.

The NFL International Series at Wembley was fifth in the list of popular events, while the NBA Global Games at the O2 and WWE Live also made the top ten.

The Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Lisbon was the most popular event for Brits travelling abroad.

A Viagogo spokesperson said: “Brits have been spoiled for choice when it comes to both home-grown and global sports in recent years.

“2014 was another vintage year, whether you were one of the 80,000 fight fans watching Froch knock out Groves, or you were experiencing the spectacle of NFL in London.”
