Capello in the clear after tax probe

12 April 2012

Fabio Capello's lawyers have been told that the England head coach and his family will not face any criminal charges following a tax investigation in Italy.

Prosecutors in Turin have spent 18 months looking into the finances of Capello and his family's trust, which includes his wife, Laura Ghisi, and two sons, Pierfilippo and Edoardo.

Press Association Sport understands that the family's legal team have now been informed that they will not be subject to any criminal charges.

Reports in Italy say that a sum of five million euros in owed taxes has been re-paid but it is understood that sum relates to a company that Capello was a director of in the 1990s and has not been associated with for 10 years. Capello himself and his family have not had to repay any sums.

The news will come as a welcome relief to the Football Association who can now look forward to Capello focusing on England's preparations for next year's World Cup finals without the shadow of the tax probe hanging over him.

The original inquiry was launched into Capello's earnings while he was coach of Juventus.

When the investigation was announced in Italy last year, Capello said in a statement: "I have assured the FA that my finances are in order. And I am not aware of any matters which would be of concern."
