Sue Campbell, a Government consultant who has played a key role in promoting sport in schools, was set to be named today as the new head of UK Sport in place of Sir Rodney Walker.

Campbell has recently been in charge of the Youth Sport Trust, a body aimed at improving the teaching of sport in schools. She has been given an 18-month contract to take over from Walker when he steps down next month.

UK Sport runs the funding of top-class athletes, drug-testing in Britain and the organisation of major sporting events.
