Calderon: Real in dark over Becks move

12 April 2012

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon feels David Beckham has betrayed him by agreeing to join the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The former England captain, who had been offered a two-year contract extension at Real, had been free to talk with interested parties from January 1 and Beckham has opted for Major League Soccer side the Galaxy, and a five-year contract worth a reported £128million.

"They (Beckham's representatives) have toyed with us for the last two months," said Calderon on Spanish Radio Station Onda Madrid. "I don't feel that it's right and I certainly don't like it."

He added: "Whenever his representatives met (sporting director) Predrag Mijatovic, they never informed him or the club that he had agreed a contract with another club.

"They never told us that Beckham had made up his decision, that he had bought a house in Los Angeles."

Real coach Fabio Capello is equally annoyed at Beckham's decision to quit the Bernabeu for the MLS, and will not consider the 31-year-old for first team duties for the remainder of the season.

Calderon has backed Capello's stance, adding: "I can understand Capello's decision to leave Beckham out of the first-team. After all, the player has his mind somewhere else.

"It's sad because, considering Beckham's time at Madrid, he deserved a better ending at the club than this one."
