Cahill hopeful of England call

12 April 2012

Gary Cahill hopes he has laid down a marker for a place in next week's England squad after Fabio Capello watched him help Bolton to a 2-1 victory at Birmingham on Saturday.

Cahill, 23, has twice been called up to the international fold but is yet to win his first full cap. And with England already qualified for next summer's World Cup, the defender hopes his club form can see him gain a place for the forthcoming qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus.

"I had no idea he (Capello) was in the stands, and that is probably a good thing. You just go about your game the same way as you'd normally do," Cahill told The Bolton News. "But I hope he took some positives from my performance."

Cahill added: "I keep trying, giving 100% and then we'll see where it takes me.

"You have to be positive, and confident in your own ability. I am hungry to get there and hopefully it will work out for me in the end."
