Bulls skipper pens new deal

12 April 2012

Bradford Bulls captain Paul Deacon has signed a new two-year contract that will keep him at the Grattan Stadium until the end of the 2010 season.

The 29-year-old Wigan-born scrum-half, who is now in his testimonial season, holds two club records with 1,002 goals and 2,306 points in 292 appearances since joining the Bulls from Oldham in 1998.

"It was an easy decision to make because this is home from home for me now," said Deacon, who is Super League's leading marksman this season with 42 goals from 49 attempts.

He added: "I've been here that many years, I am part of the furniture! There were a couple of other clubs interested but, if Bradford still wanted me, I always wanted to stay here.

"I'm really pleased they do and to sign another two years at a top club like this, I couldn't be happier."

Deacon, who is in his second year as captain, admits he would love to finish his career at Bradford.

"I'll be 31, close to turning 32, when this contract's up but I have no visions of retiring," he said.

"I still feel in as good a shape as I ever have and probably don't feel as old as I am. Who knows what will happen when I'm up again? I think it would be hard playing for anyone else."

Bradford coach Steve McNamara said: "It's fantastic news for the club. I am absolutely delighted that he has signed for the next two years as he is a very influential player for us."

Deacon is currently out of action after undergoing minor knee surgery.
