Broad replaces Lewis

12 April 2012

England seamer Jon Lewis is to return home from the World Cup for personal reasons and will be replaced in the squad by Leicestershire's Stuart Broad.

Lewis, who will depart the Caribbean without having started a match in the tournament, is coming back to the UK to be with his wife, who is experiencing complications in the latter stages of pregnancy.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "We fully understand Jon's need to be with his wife at this time and we are grateful to the technical committee for approving our request for a replacement player."

He added: "Stuart Broad performed well with the Academy squad in Australia and on the recent England A tour of Bangladesh and I am sure he will be thrilled to be joining up with the squad in the Caribbean."

Lewis, 31, did not play a match in the Caribbean despite taking the new ball in the warm-up defeat to Australia.

Lewis was one of the six players fined for breaking team discipline, drinking into the early hours, the night of England's Group C defeat to New Zealand in St Lucia.
