Britain's Olympic eventing team suffers a second blow as Wiegersma pulls out

13 April 2012

Lucy Wiegersma has become the second member of Great Britain's Olympic eventing team to withdraw from the Beijing Games.

A 'minor setback' to horse Shaabrak during training has prevented him and Wiegersma from following the ideal programme - and they join Zara Phillips and Toytown on the sidelines.

Phillips saw her Olympic dream dashed on June 11, when a training injury to Toytown left her no option but to announce her withdrawal from Beijing.

She said then: 'I am very disappointed not to have the opportunity to ride at the Olympic Games and feel that Toytown deserved his chance to go.'

The British Olympic Association have announced that Phillips and Wiegersma's places will be taken by Daisy Dick, riding Spring Along, and Tina Cook on Miners Frolic.

Simon Clegg, Team GB chef de mission, said: 'While we are naturally disappointed for Zara and Lucy, we are fortunate enough to have incredibly talented and experienced riders to step in to the fold.

'I welcome Tina and Daisy to Team GB and wish them well in their final preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games.'
