Brevett escapes with a fine

13 April 2012

West Ham's Rufus Brevett escaped with a £1,000 fine despite three charges of improper conduct resulting from Hammers' stormy clash with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium in April.

Brevett, currently on the injured list, was in the dock for his involvement in a mass confrontation at the end of the relegation battle and for striking Bolton's Kevin Nolan before barging into a police officer as he ran off the pitch.

Brevett was reprimanded and warned as to his future conduct. He was also ordered to pay undisclosed costs.

But the player escaped a suspension which is good news as well for his former team-mate Joe Cole, now with Chelsea, who faces similar charges arising from the same game in a few weeks time.

And Mick McGuire, the deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballer's Association, who represented both Brevett and Redknapp at their hearings, said: "The FA accepted Rufus' version of events and showed sympathy when judging the case."

Redknapp appeared taken aback by the punishment the FA handed him but McGuire added: "It was a fair hearing and we appreciate the delicate way in which the commission handled it."
