Brevett blow for Roeder

West Ham, already down to a wafer-thin squad following the departure of 15 players during the summer, had more bad news today when they learned that fullback Rufus Brevett could be out for five months.

The former QPR and Fulham player was injured during Saturday's goalless draw at home to Sheffield United and a scan has diagnosed a broken bone in his foot.

West Ham manager Glenn Roeder, who had hoped to strengthen his squad this week, will now make a leftback his top priority.

Roeder said: "It's bad news because Rufus has been outstanding for us since he came last January.

"The injury was a freak because it occurred with noone around him but he will be out for some time, which is just what we didn't want on top of everything else."
