Brendan Steele's first golden day

13 April 2012

Brendan Steele, who had never finished better than 17th, kept his nerve to win golf's Valero Texas Open.

The 28-year-old American took a one-stroke lead into the final day and a one-under round of 71 saw him finish on eight under, a stroke ahead of Charley Hoffman (68) and Kevin Chappell (70).

Steele said: "I was calm today. There were so many guys that could still win with a good round that I didn't feel as much pressure."

Italy's Matteo Manassero, 17, won the Malaysian Open as Rory McIlroy fell away again a week after his misery at The Masters.

A final round of 68 helped Manassero finish 16 under, one ahead of France's Gregory Bourdy (67) and two ahead of McIlroy (69). The Irishman had led by three shots at one stage during the third round.

McIlroy said: "I'm disappointed with the result but I'm proud of how I picked myself up from last week."
