Boxer Lenin Castillo has been taken to hospital after being knocked out in brutal fashion by Callum Smith.

Castillo was sent to the canvas by a huge right hand from former super-middleweight world champion Smith, making his light-heavyweight debut, in the second round of Saturday night’s contest, which took place on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight title defence against Oleksandr Usyk.

Castillo’s leg began to twitch horribly as the fight was immediately waved off and the 2008 Olympian quickly received treatment from medics.

The 33-year-old was moved onto a stretcher before being taken away from the ring to applause from the crowd.

Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn later tweeted to say that Castillo was responsive and on his way to hospital, while Sky Sports reported that he was conscious and talking.

Castillo later tweeted: “Thank you all for your prayers, everything is fine according to the studies carried out.”
