Scott Borthwick steered Durham to an eight-wicket win against Warwickshire in Division One of the LV= County Championship at Chester-le-Street.

The spinner completed a four-wicket haul and made an unbeaten 48 when sent in to open in the absence of Michael Di Venuto with a thigh strain. Graham Onions took four of Warwickshire's six remaining wickets as they were dismissed for 137, leaving Durham to score 102 to win, and Gordon Muchall (30) helped Borthwick guide them to that total.

An unbeaten century from number nine Naved Arif rescued a draw for Sussex against Lancashire at Hove. Following on 300 behind, the hosts reached 459 for nine before an early halt was called. Openers Ed Joyce (140) and Chris Nash (72) put on 169 and Arif shared in an unbroken last-wicket stand with Monty Panesar (17 not out).

Alex Hales' 84 steered Nottinghamshire towards a three-wicket win over Worcestershire at Trent Bridge. Chasing 262, Notts lost both openers to Alan Richardson (four for 88) with just 30 on the board but Hales led the way and captain Chris Read made 35 not out, winning the match with a six off Moeen Ali.

Liam Dawson made 103 not out as Hampshire reached 212 for three to frustrate Somerset on day three at the Rose Bowl. The hosts trailed by 228 after captain Marcus Trescothick's 227 led Somerset to 513 in their first innings, Jos Buttler adding 61 on Friday. But Dawson put on 181 with opening partner Jimmy Adams and pressed on to his century.

Toby Roland-Jones took four for 38 as Middlesex completed a thumping victory over Surrey by an innings and 42 runs at Lord's in Division Two, where two more matches also reached their conclusion.

Gloucestershire clinched a 45-run success over Kent at Canterbury as Will Gidman took three for 37. Azhar Mahmood hit 10 boundaries in a 119-ball innings of 70 as injury-hit Kent made a brave tilt at their target of 291.

Robbie Joseph, hampered by a thigh strain, came out with a runner and then last man Joe Denly, who broke his thumb in the field on Tuesday, emerged to try to help Azhar to the winning line. But with 45 needed Azhar worked across a good length ball from Gidman to be given out lbw and give Gloucestershire their 21-point win.

An unbeaten 136 from England hopeful Ravi Bopara helped Essex to an impressive six-wicket win over Glamorgan as they chased down a target of 160. Bopara put on 50 with international colleague Alastair Cook (79) and 217 with Matt Walker, who fell three short of a deserved hundred, to seal a fine win.

Leicestershire declared on 507 for five, a first-innings lead of 202, against Derbyshire at Grace Road. Will Jefferson reached 133 and James Taylor added 92 before Wayne White (83no) and Jigar Naik (77no) added an unbroken 168 ahead of the declaration. Derbyshire reached 17 without loss in eight overs of their second innings, with one day remaining.
