Blunder ends Droylsden's FA Cup hopes

13 April 2012

Droylsden have been thrown out of the FA Cup after they were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in their second-round replay win over Chesterfield.

Sean Newton scored both goals as the non-league club stunned their visiting League Two opponents in a 2-1 victory at their Butchers Arms ground.

But Chesterfield asked the Football Association to intervene when they discovered Newton should have been serving a one-match ban on 23 December.

Chesterfield will now face Ipswich Town on Saturday, although Droylsden have until 9am tomorrow to appeal.

An FA statement said: "The FA Cup prize fund payment of £30,000 should be redirected to Chesterfield.

"There is no fine imposed against Droylsden and the club's participation in future FA Cup competitions is not affected."
