Benitez hails Torres threat

12 April 2012

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez praised Fernando Torres and the rest of the team after they got points on the board for the first time in three matches.

Torres, a £20million summer signing from Atletico Madrid, took his tally for the season to 14 goals after a brace in the 4-1 victory against Portsmouth at Anfield.

Benitez said: "It was a great performance from the team, especially in the first half. We looked good and created a lot of chances. But then we got a little bit nervous against a team with a very good away record. Torres though is always a threat. Not only that he makes room for our other players."

He added: "He has a good mentality and experience. He uses his ability and pace to hurt defenders.

"When you have a team like ours behind you it is easy for someone like him to get chances."

Benitez, however, is refusing to get carried about about their chances of finishing high up the league.

Struggling Derby are next up on Boxing Day, but Benitez said: "It is too early to talk about the title or whether we will be in the top four.

"There are a number of sides around that mark, who are playing well, so you cannot say who are going to be contenders."

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp was furious at the way his team had defended, saying: "We started poorly then got back to 2-1 and were back in the game. But then we gave away two terrible goals due to poor defending.

"Torres is a top striker, a fantastic player who is at another level."
