Bellamy blasts 'vicious' abuse

12 April 2012

Skipper Craig Bellamy and his Wales colleagues responded with shock and indignation to the "vicious" abuse they suffered from their own fans against San Marino.

Their 2-1 win against Europe's weakest side, and the way the side's brittle confidence evaporated, drew sustained abuse from the travelling support, who chanted 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' at the players.

"That was one of the most vicious crowds I have played in front of for Wales<" said Bellamy. "You could hear it on the pitch, some of the personal stuff was vicious and collectively the abuse was vicious. When they are singing 'you are not fit to wear the shirt', a lot of the young players found it hard."

He added: "It was very harsh and some of the worst I have been involved in. I have heard it before playing for Wales, but not to that level."

And it is also clear that Bellamy and his team-mates did not take kindly to being publicly criticised over their lifestyles by boss John Toshack ahead of the game.

Bellamy said: "Some comments beforehand did not help. As an individual what I heard aimed at me on the pitch was disappointing, I think I deserve a little better than that.

"For me, you end up thinking 'why am I here?'. I could easily have shelved these last two games. I have always played for my country.

"People can criticise me, and they do, about other things. But one thing they cannot criticise is my attitude to my country and what I do for my country."
