Beckham makes bit of history

14 April 2012

David Beckham's reign in Spain continued as he scored Real Madrid's opening goal in their 2-1 Champions League victory in Marseille.

Real had already qualified for the knock-out stage and Beckham put them on the way to their fourth win in five matches with a freekick in the 35th minute.

It was Real's 600th goal in European competition and Beckham, who is on his way to Buckingham Palace today to receive his OBE from the Queen, said: "The most important thing was that it helped us win the game but it is always nice to make history in the process."

Porto joined Real in qualifying from Group F after their 2-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade.

Defending champions AC Milan beat Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam to book their place in the knockout stages.
