Beckham can be a star in the Galaxy, says Woods

14 April 2012

World number one golfer Tiger Woods has added his support for David Beckham's move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy - insisting it will provide a boost to both the city and football in America.

Both players are arguably the biggest names in their chosen sports and while Woods look set to continue dominating golf for many years to come, Beckham's move has been criticised by some as a lack of ambition.

But Woods believes the former England captain's global celebtrity status will draw the crowds in Los Angeles and revive a sport that is overshadowed by basketball, baseball and American Football.

When asked if there was room for another major sports star in the United States, he commented: "No doubt about that.

"I think in Los Angeles we have basically lost two American football teams there, the Rams and the Raiders moved out.

"Now we are looking for something else and I think with David's star power there will bring it another notch and another thing for all of us in southern California to come out and watch."

At 31, Beckham is entering the twilight years of his career and while Woods is the same age he admits he has no plans to retire any time soon.

He added: "It is pretty simple for me. I'll retire from this game when my best isn't good enough any more, period.

"I couldn't handle it if I go out there and prepare and play my best and it is no longer good enough. There would be no reason to play any more."
