Becker: I can't understand why Greg would cheat

Boris Becker today described Greg Rusedski's failure to pass a drugs test as just what tennis needed to address all the issues involved.

The retired German admitted he was baffled as to why the 30-year-old would want to cheat, particularly because of the stage he is at in his career.

Becker said: "You may not want to say it to his face but Rusedski's case is just the opportunity tennis has needed. He's a wellknown face, a premier player who has returned a positive test and now we have to find the reasons and listen to his story.

"He is the one with the positive levels of nandrolone in his body, but he's pointing the fingers at others. Who has done what to him, and why?"

Becker continued: "There are a few things about the case that don't make sense, but one sticks out as far as I'm concerned. Why would anyone in their right frame of mind, with little chance of winning the biggest tournaments, want to risk whatever is left of their career by taking a performanceenhancing drug?

"If he is guilty, then the full force of the punishment against him has to be meted out."
