Baltacha runs out of steam

13 April 2012

British No3 Elena Baltacha showed signs of recovery in Birmingham after missing fourth months of the season because of illness.

The 18-year-old lost 6-1, 6-3 to Spain's Magui Serna in the first round of the DFS Classic but was 2-0 ahead in the second set when rain caused a two-hour delay.

Baltacha, ranked 238 in the world, said: "The second set was much better than the first. My service wasn't good enough in the first set."

She was out of action for four months from November, first because of chickenpox and then food poisoning and tonsilitis.
