Nicola Adams survived a scare to beat Bulgaria’s Stoyka Petrova today and move a step closer to more boxing history.

Adams lost the first round but recovered to win a points decision and book a place in the 51kg flyweight semi-final at the European Games.

Petrova is the only woman to beat Adams since she won gold at London 2012, and the 32-year-old Briton was made to work hard by her opponent.

Adams, the first woman to win Olympic and Commonwealth gold medals and bidding to complete an unprecedented treble here, said: “She is a top-class opponent and I always expected a tough bout. Every time I step into the ring they all want to beat Nicola Adams so I have to bring my A-game. It is a shame this was not the final because it was a really good fight.”

Adams, competing in her first major competition since having shoulder surgery in the autumn, faces Turkey’s Elif Coskun in the last four on Wednesday. “I have not been in the ring with her before,” said Adams. “But I will watch videos of her and go into that fight confident.”

Ireland’s Olympic champion Katie Taylor faces Sweden’s Ida Lundblad in the 60kg lightweight quarter-final on Wednesday.
