Baggy Greens bundled out

Umar Gul

A middle-order batting collapse left Australia bowled out for just 176 against Pakistan in their final World Cup group stage clash in Colombo.

With both teams having qualified for the quarter-finals, the game was all about topping Group B and it was the Asian side that provided most of the fireworks.

Umar Gul was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, finishing with three for 30, and Abdul Razzaq chipped in with a brace himself.

Having won the toss, Australia lost Shane Watson early on to Gul but recovered well thanks to Brad Haddin and skipper Ricky Ponting, who carefully took the total to 67 in 15 overs.

The pair's approach was defensive at best but after a 63-run stand, Ponting's poor form continued as he fell caught behind to Mohammad Hafeez for just 19.

Haddin was involved in a heated discussion with the Pakistan players during a review of Ponting's wicket, but kept calm to prod his way to 42 off 80 deliveries before edging Wahab Riaz for a simple catch to wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal.

The scoring rate dipped below four as spinners Hafeez and Shahid Afridi kept Michael Clarke and Cameron White in check with some tight bowling, and the pressure finally paid dividends as White was needlessly run out in an attempted quick single.

The boundary shots had all but dried up for Australia, who sank further towards a collapse with the loss of set batsmen Clarke (34) and Michael Hussey (12) quickly followed by Mitchell Johnson for a duck.

Jason Krejza (seven) became Gul's second victim while Steven Smith's gutsy 25 off 32 balls raised some hope before he was bowled by Afridi, and Gul fittingly wrapped up the innings by dispatching Brett Lee for five.
