Australians call off tour to Zimbabwe

13 April 2012

The Australian Cricket Board have called off next month's tour to Zimbabwe over fears for the safety of players and management.

The Board has been taking daily updates on the position of foreigners in Zimbabwe since the African country was suspended from the Commonwealth after Robert Mugabe was reelected as president.

ACB chairman Bob Merriman revealed that advice from a number of government and nongovernment sources had identified an increasing risk to the squad in Zimbabwe.

Merriman said: "The security of our people is our first priority and it is now clear that travelling to Zimbabwe would compromise their safety.

"Given this situation, the ACB has now advised the Zimbabwe Cricket Union that the Australian cricket team is unable to travel to Zimbabwe."
