Australia nearing Windies' total

13 April 2012

The Australians batted themselves into a strong position by tea on the third day of the third Test at the Adelaide Oval.

West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh removed nightwatchman Jason Gillespie for four after he had added only two runs to his overnight score but that brought Ricky Ponting to the crease to join Mark Waugh.

The pair then put the tourists' attack to the sword with a stand of 123 with Ponting dominating the partnership.

Waugh finally departed for 63 when Mervyn Dillon trapped him lbw with the second new ball, the young fast bowler's first wicket of the innings.

Damien Martyn came in and he and the vice-captain saw Australia to 355 for five at the tea interval - just 36 runs behind the Windies' first innings total.
