Left-hander Marcus North's ungainly pull for four off James Anderson in the fifth over of the morning took them to 502 for five as England continued to struggle with the ball.

Broad was taken for 16 runs in his first two overs, however, with Brad Haddin emphasising his intent with his early strokes.

Twice he found the boundary in Broad's opening over - a clip off the pads followed by a top-edged hook - and caressed a cover drive to the rope in the next over from the Taff end, one which included two wides from attempted bouncers.
