Despite being born in Missouri, this defender has been associated with Arsenal since he was 12 when his parents moved to this country to work. He was brought to the attention of Arsenal by former West Ham defender Tony Gale, who played Simek in his Sunday youth team.

Stathis Tavlaridis

This defender established himself in Greek football and was spotted playing for his national team at youth level.

Ryan Smith

An England youth regular, the midfielder is from Islington and was spotted playing schools football.

David Bentley
Nationality: English.

This former England Under-18 captain and striker was born in Peterborough and brought to the attention of Highbury scouts when playing schools football in Hertfordshire.

Gael Clichy
Nationality: French.
Age: 18
The defender joined after a trial this summer from AS Cannes. The French club let him go for a minimal amount of compensation after suffering relegation.

Quincy Owusu-Abeyie

Dutch.
Age: 17
The Amsterdam-born striker was released by Ajax but got the chance to impress on trial at Arsenal through an agent.

Francesc Fabregas
Nationality:
Spanish.
Age: 16
Midfielder 'Cesc' is another youngster who caused uproar when he joined Arsenal this season. A £700,000 compensation fee with significant additional costs was agreed with his academy club Barcelona after he won both player of the tournament and the Golden Boot in the Fifa World Under-17 Championship in Finland last summer.

Olafur-Ingi Skulason

Icelandic.
Age: 20
Brought up in Iceland's league, the youngster who can play in midfield or defence played UEFA Cup football aged 17 and was spotted by scouts playing in an international youth tournament.
