Armstrong could get Scotland call

12 April 2012

Scotland manager Alex McLeish is considering calling up Sheffield United defender Chris Armstrong for this month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Georgia and Italy.

The uncapped full-back qualifies through his Scottish-born grandparents, and McLeish has been alerted to his fine form by Blades assistant boss Stuart McCall, the former Scotland midfielder.

"A lot of players have been recommended to us in the past few weeks who haven't yet played for Scotland," said McLeish in The Scotsman. "One of the names is the guy at Sheffield United - Chris Armstrong."

He added: "These are things which take close scrutiny. We will consider everybody.

"Stuart McCall mentioned him because we noticed [United midfielder Nick] Montgomery had done very well."

Armstrong, 24, helped United win promotion to the Barclays Premiership and has been a regular in Neil Warnock's side this season.

Ahead of the Georgia match on March 24 and Italy away clash four days later, McLeish added: "It's not as if these guys will definitely be in the next squad, but we have been looking at players such as this."

However Armstrong may be ineligible to represent Scotland, having been capped at Under-20 level by England earlier in his career.

FIFA statutes dictate that "...any player who has already represented one association in a match (either in full or in part) in an official competition of any category or any type of football may not play an international match for a representative team of another association".

Armstrong played for the England Under-20 side at the 2002 Toulon Tournament.
