Argentina rule out early exit

13 April 2012

Argentina's players are refusing to contemplate a premature World Cup exit in their decisive Group F match against Sweden tomorrow.

The pre-tournament favourites must beat the Swedes to be sure of progressing to the second round.

Having made a good start with a 1-0 win over Nigeria, Argentina now find themselves in third place in the group, a point behind both Sweden and England.

"I don't even look at my suitcases," said forward Ariel Ortega, summing up the mood of confidence in the squad.

Striker Gabriel Batistuta said that if Argentina's well-organised attacking style failed them, they would have to grind out a victory by sheer guts.

Pablo Aimar, a half-time substitute in Argentina's 1-0 defeat by England on Friday, is expected to start against Sweden with either Juan Sebastian Veron or Diego Simeone dropping to the bench.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa may also be able to recall captain Roberto Ayala, who has not yet played in the tournament due to a thigh injury.

The Swedes, who top of the group on goals scored, are expected to be unchanged from the team that beat Nigeria 2-1 on Friday. Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg is set to play despite some pain from a lingering hip injury.
